Can you report a marriage that you suspect is not real?

In order to gain American citizenship, some applicants may try to bypass others by resorting to marriage fraud. Having an American citizen spouse is one of the fastest paths to citizenship. USCIS has a thorough vetting process, but it is not always possible to prevent all such fraud.

If you have information about a marriage fraud for immigration purposes, USCIS would appreciate your help. There are many ways you can contact USCIS anonymously. You can go on record as a "concerned citizen" to protect your identity. You should collect concrete evidence of fraud and the following information about individuals:

  • Name
  • Name of sponsor
  • Nicknames
  • Addresses
  • Immigration number (A-number) (if possible)

Based on this information, the government will need this information to identify the person who has committed a sham marriage.

The most direct way to report marriage fraud is to contact the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This is the immigration police force. You can reach them by phone and remain anonymous - call 1-(866)-DHS-2-ICE or visit the "" website. These lines are specifically designated for reporting immigration violations.

You can also contact USCIS directly by phone at 1-(800)-375-5283. When you speak to a live representative, you can be assured that your information is properly registered. You can also schedule an InfoPass appointment to discuss marriage fraud with a USCIS official.

If you suspect that a marriage is not real, you should fill out the "Tip Form" on ICE's official website. By filling out this form, you can submit your tip to the authorities:

  • In order to apply, you must first fill in the personal information (name, surname, telephone number, e-mail address and place of application) on the form.
  • The suspected crime should then be marked on the form and information about the location of the crime should be entered.
  • After this information, information about whether the offending party is an individual or a company should be entered and questions about whether you have made a similar complaint before should be answered.
  • Finally, when a maximum of 1000 words of information about the crime is entered into the form in the system and the form submission is completed, the notification is completed.
